A successful interior paint job starts with rigorous preparation
The final coat only reveals the quality of the surface beneath it. The lifespan of a paint job is decided during preparation: a poorly prepared wall will show its flaws within weeks, however good the paint applied to it.
At Renovhome SA, every interior painting project follows the same protocol:
- Protecting floors, furniture and joinery — dust sheets, specialist masking tape, precise covering.
- Assessing the surfaces — cracks, flaking, defects from old coatings, traces of damp.
- Preparation — filling, levelling, skimming, sanding, dust removal.
- Suitable primer for the surface (new plasterboard, old coating, damp surface).
- Two coats of paint applied in the direction of the light, with the right tools for the finish sought.
- Final inspection under raking light — the step that sets a rushed job apart from one that is properly handed over.
Which paints do we use?
The choice of paint depends on the room, the surface and how it is used. In Geneva, older buildings often call for a bonding primer that newer ones do not need. For living spaces, we apply matt or eggshell acrylic paints — easy on the eye and easy to touch up. For hallways, entrance halls and high-traffic areas, washable paints ensure good durability over time.
All our paints are low-VOC — better air quality and compliance with Swiss health requirements.
Colours: advice or execution?
You can send us your colour references (NCS, RAL, Le Corbusier, Farrow & Ball, etc.) — we buy and apply them. Otherwise, we advise you on contrasts, the brightness of the room, its aspect and how the colour works with your existing furniture. The colour remains your final decision.
For what kind of property?
- Flats — from 1.5 to 7.5 rooms, occupied or empty.
- Detached houses — living spaces, upper floors, converted basements.
- Offices and commercial premises — work outside opening hours on request.
- High-end homes — refined finishes, colour matching, decorative paints.
What determines how long a project takes?
The duration depends on the surface area, the condition of the surfaces, ceiling heights and the chosen finishes — more so than on any fixed rate. It is set out with you in the quote, and the schedule is fixed around your availability. You keep a dedicated contact, from the survey through to handover.
And after the work is done?
- Clean removal of protections and waste.
- Cleaning of unpainted surfaces (floors, skirting boards).
- A summary of the products used (reference, colour, supplier) — useful for your future touch-ups.
- A 2-year Swiss legal warranty on the work.
Interior painter in Geneva — for which projects?
Renovhome SA carries out interior painting work across all the common Geneva configurations:
- Refreshing an occupied flat — work carried out with occupants present, room by room, with a reinforced cleanliness protocol. Particularly suited to homeowners who want to renovate without moving out.
- Painting after moving in — empty flat, quick work before the furniture arrives. The best results are achieved in this configuration.
- Painting after second-fix work — coordination with joiners, electricians and flooring specialists. Renovhome SA steps in at the end of the project to apply the finishing coat.
- Repairs after water damage — see our dedicated water-damage service, which includes treating residual damp before painting.
- Preparing for sale or letting — a freshly painted flat lets and sells more quickly. We work around your availability thanks to our between-tenancy repaint service.
Geneva building stock — what you should know
A painter in Geneva works on a wide variety of surfaces depending on the era of the building. Renovhome SA is familiar with every type found in the canton:
- Haussmann-style buildings (Eaux-Vives, Champel, Plainpalais) — ceiling heights often above 2.80 m, plaster cornices, sometimes on timber lath for the original partitions. Preparation calls for a precise assessment of the surface.
- 1960s–70s buildings (Le Lignon, Onex, Meyrin, modernist estates) — standardised plasterboard or plaster surfaces, more restricted ceiling heights, finishes often needing to be redone entirely.
- 1990s–2010s construction — smooth plasterboard, modern acrylic paints. The finishes are quick to apply but call for a carefully chosen bonding primer.
- New developments (Pont-Rouge, Belle-Terre, Les Sciers) — new plasterboard surfaces, requirements for certified eco-friendly paints, stretched ceilings in some units.
How does an interior painting quote work?
- First contact — by phone, email or the online form. You describe the project: the rooms involved, the condition of the surfaces, any scheduling constraints.
- Site visit — a dedicated Renovhome SA contact comes to you, takes measurements and identifies the points to watch. The visit is free and with no commitment, anywhere in the canton of Geneva.
- Your free quote — a detailed estimate, room by room, surface by surface, item by item. Any additional work is submitted and quoted to you before it is undertaken.
- Approval — you approve the quote with a signed reply. The schedule is fixed with you straight away.
- The work — starts at the agreed slot, with a dedicated contact who follows your project from quote to handover.
Frequently asked questions about interior painting
- Do you need to empty the room to paint it? Not necessarily. For a refresh, we work around the furniture, protecting it fully. For a full repaint on damaged surfaces, emptying the room is preferable.
- How long before the room can be used again? Modern acrylic paints are touch-dry within a few hours and the room can usually be used again the same day. The smell then fades gradually.
- Which finish for a living room? A matt or eggshell paint is generally preferred for visual comfort and the way it reads contrasts. A washable finish can be useful in high-traffic rooms.
- And for a child’s bedroom? A low-VOC acrylic paint is essential, with a washable finish recommended. Renovhome SA uses only paints that meet Swiss health requirements.
- How do you choose a colour without getting it wrong? Test it in large format (at least 50×50 cm) on the wall concerned and look at it at different times of day. Renovhome SA provides samples on request during the quote stage.
